Capturing lightning requires timing, correct settings, luck, and the proper equipment.

Well, one out of four ain’t bad.

There was one time I spent hours in my parents garage and I finally did bottle the lighting. I then foolishly thought that it was easy; never tried again.

That one’s 30 seconds. That’s as long as my R10 goes without putting it in its special little “bulb” mode. ISO all the way down to 100, aperture stopped down pretty far, direction chosen based on the last several bolts so of course the next strike happens somewhere else.

I wonder if pre-shooting, or whatever canon calls their implementation of this feature, would help? Granted, a long exposure should catch it too, but unless you’re constantly going to be taking long exposures…

I did some lighting photography about 15 years ago. I did 30 second shots too. And then I also stacked some in processing to get some more dramatic shots.

Spent 2 occasions out in a storm trying to get photos. Probably nearly an hour each session

Nothing I got was that good tho.

Probably something that takes a lot of sessions to land the perfect shots.

        Like wildlife photography.

I never had that kind of patience.
