I dunno. I feel like a few countries made a similar bet (but to a higher extreme) during the Arab spring and it went extra bad. It’s important to be careful about who and what you’re trying to replace an authoritarian system with.

For this race, I agree. The worst he can be is a Fetterman… Who sucks but is still better than fucking Dr. Oz.
But be careful with this line of thinking. It’s very similar to how the right ended up voting for Trump. It’s actually how a lot of really awful governments gained power. “Anything different” than the current catastrophe does not inherently mean better.

Im pretty wary… i think hes probably got a bit of authoritarian streak and probably got this tat when he was young and dumb and in the military which leans right. I also think people change and he has changed. I think he’s taken a hard left on the economy and class consciousness.
But is his authoritarian streak gone? His reddit comments show that at the time of posting he had little sympathy for sexual assault victims and was at the very least kinda weird about black people. Hes also very pro gun, which I dont find to be an inherent issue and I even agree the left needs to be more prepared and armed, but when lined up with other problematic views it stresses me out. And I dont realllly trust all of his hand waving around the tattoo and reddit comments.
But maybe should we embrance that hes a bit of a bulldog in an era when the left is so toothless? Also its almost impossible to do worse than Susan Collins lol.

I read fried shrimp instead of friendship at first.

Agreed. I’m anti-authoriatiran first and a leftist second. I’ll gladly overlook disagreements on most policy for the sake of unity, but I won’t overlook authoritariansm.
I think, for some people, calorie counting is frutrating. Personally, I’m a bit too neurotic for it. I get really caught up in the details and coutning every calorie right and then frustration when the calories are reported incorrectly or if mutliple sources give different calorie values for the same raw ingredient. I honestly get so obsessive when I try to calorie count it becomes a borderline eating disorder. And, in fact, calroie counting has resulted in eating disorders for many people.
I think it’s good for a lot of other people. But, when it boils down to it, any diet you can stick to is the right diet for you. Seriously, research has shown time and time again that, after a few months, most diets have the same weight loss results for most people if they stick to it. So I personally don’t find the “its just calories in and out” rhetoric thats really popular to always be the most correct or helpful statment.
Ok but my point is you’re not just eating cake so its hard to keep track of the linear relationship sometimes. Calorie reporting can be incorrect and bodies are weird. That’s all I’m saying.
Realistically, being on most any diet is equally effective. From simple calorie counting to the keto diet. It turns out that, if you find a diet you can stick to, then just kind of paying attention to what you’re eating in a general sense works.
I wasn’t talking about fiber, but the sugars bound to fiber. Its very hard to accurately labele just the bioavailable calories, even if you account for things like fiber.
On the note of genetics, it’s not just about metabolism. People have different abilities to even absorb the same calories. People have food intolerances, different rates at which they move food through the digestive tract, and different intestinal permeability.
This isn’t meant as an excuse to eat junk and not pay attention to your food. But, I actually find more help in paying attention to food quality and listening to how your body interacts with different food. E.g., eat less processed food, be aware that eating fat slows digestion, pay attention to your intolerances, stop eating when full, cut out snacking (again, especially processed foods). If you do this, its very likely you won’t need to count at all.
That’s not to say that, if calorie counting works for you, then you shouldn’t do it. Its just not the end all be all people act like it is. Pretty much any diet and paying more attention to what you eat in any way works: https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/32238384/
Eh. Calories are… Tricky. What is a calorie? A unit of food which, when burned, will heat a gram of water by 1 degree Celsius. But your body isnt just a furnace, it’s complex. And everyone is physiologically different - we aren’t all running at the same efficiency (base metabolism). And not all calories are available. For example, fiber is not digestable and can’t be absorbed by the digestive system and it also associates with simple sugars which also prevents them from being properly absorbed. So, eating whole fruits will result in absorbing less sugar than drinking juice which has the same total amount of sugar. Processing food - even just cooking it - makes calories more bioavailable.
For sure it can conceptually be boiled down to calories effectively absorbed and calories burned. But digging into what that actually means can actually be quite tricky.

People say nope to proton and signal in here without offering a better alternative. I’m open to shitting on them (proton CEO really pissed me off by praising the trump admin), but just saying nope to them without functional alternatives isn’t helpful.
The vaccine has a risk of causing heart complications. It should be monitored. COVID has a much higher risk of heart complications.

DivestOS used to be the bomb. Super secure. Monthly updates. Super private. Ran on tons of hardware. But it was run by 1 guy and he recently dropped the project. Which is fair, it was a lot of free labor and donations weren’t paying the bills, but so sad :(
For real. Like, if you have two brain cells to rub together, you observe body language and mix checking in on your partner with dirty talk. It’s not like “are you still consenting?! Do you still like me?!” Literally there’s porn lines you can copy like “yeah, you like that?” or “I want you to beg for it” or “tell/show me what you like” or whatever is up your alley. Deliver it with a modicum of confidence and its not weird.

I have a FP 4 that is just starting to get screen burn. I will probably just replace the screen soon to be honest and keep using it.

/e/OS is good, I also use Calyx with MicroG and all of my bank apps work.

Western Europe doesn’t really have an issue with overpopulation and resulting kill shelters for cats and dogs. In fact, all of my friends with dogs have to import them from Eastern Europe. So, I really hope they’re not getting cats and dogs donated to them…
But, they also explicitly say “chickens, rabbits and guinea pigs.” Not sure how many these unwanted pets there are that it will feed their animals much…
But it also seems like this article suggests this zoo has a history of unnecessary euthanization of zoo animals and feeding to other animals…

I dunno. I moved to Europe and there’s smartphones and social media here. But my colleagues kids are at birthday parties and hanging out with friends and going to events every weekend. This seems like a real US thing.

I grew up in rural america in a tourist town. We hated the tourists. Wealthy. Arrogant. Rude. Unaware of local customs. Drove up rent and grocery prices.
But, at the end of the day, we were the only town within an hour radius that wasn’t crumbling. All those vacation homes paid property taxes and the school system was great. There were jobs for people.
There are a lot of issues with unregulated tourism and immigration. But it’s better to regulate the issues and keep up with fostering good job markets and building government controlled affordable housing instead of try and ban a chunk of your economy. Which, from this limited article, it seems like the government is trying to do.

Big warning on moving to Brazil for science. Getting lab materials takes forever to get delivered and frequently just never arrives. I had a roommat do her last year of PhD research in the us because work was so much faster here due to how much better and more reliable logistics are.
