Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Does anyone else also have this weird feeling that maybe governments can already break into smartphones and this whole "we can't break into it" they tell the public is a facade?
8·6 days agoThere was a story from the podcast ‘Darknet Dairies’ where it was discovered that a journalist’s phone had tracking software uploaded to their phone in a zero click text. The target’s phone received a text in the middle of the night that uploaded the software and then deleted any history of the text being received. I think this is one of features of the Pegasus software sold by the NSO Group. And that was 5 or 6 years ago.

Technology@lemmy.world•Judge scolds Mark Zuckerberg's team for wearing Meta glasses to social media trialEnglish
584·12 days agoThis feels like gorilla marketing to me. They knew the judge would tell them to take them off and it would be just enough of a sensational story to make it to press. Now more people know that Meta has these glasses.
Edit: I’m not changing it. The responses to my mistake are too funny

politics @lemmy.world•House Speaker welcomes Trump call to ‘take over’ elections, claims Dem wins appear ‘fraudulent’
5·28 days agoI think Obama not pursuing charges against those in the Bush administration was another, more recent, bit of bullshit.
as an aside - Read somewhere that this argument that the government can’t afford all of these things like healthcare, infrastructure, etc. that would help most people is bullshit. Since the federal government prints it’s own money there is nothing that it can’t afford. We spent 3 - 8 trillion on the Afghanistan and Iraq wars alone. And when people argue that it will increase inflation - sure maybe, but if you tax wealthy people more it can cover part or all of the newly printed money.
Note: I’m a bit of an idiot about this stuff - so this article could be completely off base and I just wouldn’t know.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•How come residential power lines aren't buried underground still?
2·1 month agoThere is moisture above ground too and ground movement can affect the poles as well. I would think that there is more exposure to damages above ground with cars hitting them, tree limbs, strong winds, animals chewing through wires, etc. While it’s easier to repair damages above ground I believe there would be less of them with buried lines.

2·1 month ago“for future reference…” Like OP is gong to re-apply to this company.
I think one of the reasons he did it was an executive from McDonald’s had stated that their food was healthy and someone could eat it everyday for a month without health consequences. His goal was to prove this was an obvious lie. Secondly how many low income people are stuck in a system where this is the only food that is conveniently available and how that is making generations of low-income households sick.
Not sure about the alcoholism - but this wasn’t a strict scientific trial so…
People in the MAGA world genuinely believe that most people think like them. The difference is that they are the brave ones that speak truth to power, everyone else is just a timid sycophant the bows down to the “woke” mafia.

13·3 months agoThe Comprehensive 2024 Election Theft Fact Check is a well researched take on all of this. Have to admit that sharing it feels like a blue-Q type thing (Trump and the MAGAgats have done a great job poisoning the well when it comes to questioning election integrity) but if you can get through it all, it does line up with a valid take on the 2024 election.

Sokolov is building a £1.8bn AI datacentre in Gibraltar, the enclave’s biggest outside investment.
