I first saw this shortly after Jurassic Park gained mass popularity. I was always convinced Gary was influenced by the T-Rex chase scene.
These mirrors make things look smaller (appear further), hence the warning. So there’s a giant eyeball or whatever that appears to be pretty close, and the joke is that it’s even closer than that?
Maybe it’s INCONCEIVABLY large.
They may look close… but they’re even closer than you think.
So the eye is literally pressed up against the mirror and somehow otherwise invisible?
