GPU memory is the new performance bottleneck, but how much GDDR7 will Micron actually be making?

Without a source and being too lazy to look one up, we need to be mindful that the brain of an org sometimes doesn’t communicate with the mouth until the last second. I know PR represents a company, but did the PR at Micron say this or did an exec say this? It is fully possible the PR folks at Micron were doing their job and then some exec came in and shit on their messaging at the last possible second.

2x16, 32 GB of DDR5 RAM is currently roughly the 4 times the price per ounce as silver is currently priced per ounce.

… who cares about GDDR7 RAM?

You’re not going to be able to safely afford it unless you’re doing considerably well off, financially.

You can run Cyberpunk 77 at ultra settings, at 1440p, at at least 70 fps 1% mins, with an RX 6750 XT and an AM4 5700G, 16GB DDR4 RAM.

Think like a corpo, spend like a streetkid.

… there have been some driver updates since then. And game updates.

Yeah, as with any pc under roughly $1500-$2000, you’ll be needing upscaling to handle real time raytracing. And frame gen.

I mean, you’ll generally be needing upscaling and frame gen to handle raytracing at +60fps for any res other than 1080p or lower, within the $1500 - $2000 price range, so I’m not really sure what point you’re trying to make.

… read my comment again, I updated it.

Glad you took all of 30 seconds to watch that ~12 minute video.

I’ve read what you added, and double checked the video to confirm that ray tracing is also turned off entirely.

I didn’t watch the video in its entirety because your numbers sounded really high for a mid specced system running a game that is notoriously demanding at its highest settings, and you linked it to me saying that the difference was due to game and driver updates. I skipped to the part of the video showing the settings they used (and the performance overlay) to confirm that the settings were different from the article I linked, which would easily explain the difference.

Ok, noted, I will not discuss budget solutions to maximize your gaming bang for your buck with you again.

Calling a company that is interested in profit traitor is hilariously naive.

What profit? In order for them to get profit these datacenters need to first make profit which they haven’t, they gave up long term profit that they would have gotten from us for short term promised profit that technically does not yet exist, so yeah traitors is appropriate.

I mean traitor implies there’s an allegiance to someone. But because it’s a company, that allegiance is to profit. It doesn’t matter that they pissed off consumers, they are now producing for enterprise customers (B2B) and from what I know they are making good money on that. To be clear, they make money from customers like Microsoft and Nvidia, and those can afford it because openai et al is renting their infrastructure, and chatgpt is about to go bankrupt, but for now micron is doing incredibly well.

My prediction is they will get hit by a chatgpt bankruptcy and datacenter regulations and thus this is very short term and long term this will be way more risky, but I also don’t think demand for datacenters will shrink generally.

But yeah, ad the optics for consumers go, they kinda burned some bridges.
