Both are 29.99 on Steam right now, have 30.00 in my budget.

Which do I buy, and what do I do with my penny?

I have played Sekiro a little when it first came out, but got frustrated and gave it away with my Xbox One, now I feel like with better hardware (good PC) I might enjoy the game more (less frustrating parry timing).

I have played Elden Ring a decent bit, somehow never quite beat it, but enjoyed it.

I have also played / beaten DS 3 XXX times, and Bloodborne XXXXXXXXXXXXX times, beaten Demon Souls remake, and Dark Souls remaster, Dark Souls 2 as well.

Which one do I buy /Soulslike?

Sekiro is the first Fromsoft game I got 100% on.

I’m not a fan of multiplayer games, so I still haven’t played Nightreign.

Both are very different aspects of the Fromsoft formula.

Nightreign is not worth $30. Especially if you aren’t planning on playing with a set group. It’s technically solo-able, but much more fun if a full three-person team on chat.

seems like the strong consensus in this thread, going to pull the trigger and ACTUALLY beat it this time, last time I got stuck on the first real skill check (tower boss) and I didn’t have the time or the attention span to make it through.

It’s kinda hard to give you a specific recommendation without knowing what exactly it is you’re looking for.

Nightreign is multiplayer, so if that’s something you like in addition to that classic soulslike-combat sauce with some tweaks for faster gameplay, go for Nightreign. It’s relatively light on lore from what I’ve seen and heard, so it’s primarily focused on gameplay: getting better with characters and their diverse kits, repeating the, more or less, same gameplay loops over and over again like in a roguelike. That sorta thing. There’s also some fan service involved in that you might meet some long-forgotten favourites from other FS titles you’ve played.

If you’re looking for a more contained, “classic” but still different experience compared to your average soulslike, Sekiro is definitely the game to get. It’s hard to get into at first, as you’ve probably experienced first-hand back when you’ve played it, but it’s so rewarding when you do finally get into it and the game clicks with you. Its storytelling is more direct which some people like or dislike - depends on your preferences - and the gameplay is even more fast-paced compared to DS3 or BB. Additionally, its focus on parries makes for a completely different fight dynamic and approach to combat since you’re encouraged face attacks head-on instead of pursuing the standard dodge-and-weave playstyle of standard soulslikes. The art direction of the game is amazing too: easily some of the best-looking areas in FS’s catalogue imo.

I can only vouch for Sekiro since I’ve not played Nightreign, but it’s easily one of the best (soulslike) games ever made, IMHO, and definitely worth giving it another shot if you’re willing to. Nightreign would probably be the safer option if you fancy multiplayer and want a more standard-ish experience.

i expected it to be light on lore, but was pleasantly surprised how good the character storylines are, and how they actually fill the gaps of the basic game lore

thread seems to heavily favor Sekiro, it had been on my “rebuy” list when on sale for quite some time, and I remember the game fondly but feeling like I just could not nail the parry timings!

I’m going to give it another shot and save Night Reign for a future sale since I don’t really have too many soulsborne gamer friends and I don’t really want to play alone or with randos (get enough of that on hell divers 2 where I can at least carry a bit).

Thanks for taking the time to help me make my choice!

Yea, it’s definitely difficult to get into at first, but compared to other soulslikes that have a similar parry system in place - Lies of P, First Berserker Khazan - it’s a lot more forgiving, actually. In some cases, you can even just spam the block button for some “random” parries here and there. For most people, it takes them up to around the half-way point of the game, the first major roadblock for many, when they get the hang of the combat. It can be quite frustrating at times for sure, though.

Feel free to drop by and ask for help too if you need to - there are many on here who could share their knowledge with you! :)

i love both, but would recommend playing Sekiro first. Nightreign has a playable character whith mechanics almost similar to Sekiro, and i guess it would be easier to adopt them after (not necessarily tho). also Nightreign is designed as an online game. even tho it has amazing story and a it’s even possible to play solo, it has a different vibe comparing to classic soulslikes

great thought, I’m more of a solo guy so that is something I was thinking about, I had heard people not enjoying night reign if they didn’t have a squad

the game learning curve is steeper because of limited time for a run, and some “training” solo runs and explanation videos helped me to improve (i avoid guides in regular soulslikes, but the only alternative here is investing tremendous amounts of time to learn even basics). then when you already understand what to do, its better even with randos imo. most of my regular “story” runs were fun and positive. i know people are salty in “ranked” mode, but i haven’t tried it and probably won’t without a proper squad

I’m playing Sekiro right now and loving it so I’d say go with that one. More people need to play it!
