News@lemmy.world•“I Don’t Feel Safe”: Black Memphis Residents Report Harassment by Trump’s Police Task Force
20·5 hours agoAn MLK50 analysis of one day’s worth of arrest records obtained by the news organization found that nearly three quarters of the 51 people arrested Oct. 13 were not charged with a violent crime.
The task force said it has made 1,744 arrests as of Oct. 29, though it did not specify how many of those were related to violent crime.
Locking people up in the U.S. for whatever they can make stick, and promising immunity to their secret police. Murdering civilians in international waters for absolutely no reason, which is confirmed by them releasing any survivors instead of detaining them. Destroying the economy, cutting food benefits and healthcare for Americans while building a fucking ballroom, and making 10 of the richest men in the U.S. $7 billion richer in less than 1 year.
When you put it all together, it almost looks like somebody that really hates America is pulling the strings and trying to destroy our country. But everyone in the White House is such a patriot. Weird.

17·2 days agoExactly, nothing wrong with drinking and axe throwing, but when you bring it into work with you it becomes a problem. Especially when you hit a bystander with the axe.
This definitely seems like one of those things that clearly foreshadowed the future, but Republicans downplayed and acted like everyone else was crazy for even bringing it up.

37·2 days agogiven the circumstances, getting that testimony is plainly lawmakers’ responsibility to the country—at an absolute minimum.
Republicans seem to be helping the Trump administration avoid taking responsibility for their crimes? How out of character.
Republicans should be pressed to seek this, and if they refuse, they should be mercilessly hounded until they agree to do their jobs. The country may be going to war. They can’t be allowed to get away with anything less.
I am so sick of these fucking passive aggressive bitches. Holding secret briefings that only Republicans can attend? Wtf is reality? It’s like we’re being dragged into fucking WWIII by that fugly skank Regina George.

News@lemmy.world•Heritage Foundation Staff Revolt Over Tucker Carlson and Nick Fuentes
1·2 days agoRight but they’ve also been making a lot of money via the genocide the Israeli government has carried out. They were co-founded by a hardcore antisemitic asshole name Paul Weyrich, but for the last year or so have been doing shit like this: https://www.heritage.org/conservatism/commentary/revolution-principles-and-american-conservatism-now
On this week’s episode of “The Kevin Roberts Show,” we’re joined by Yoram Hazony, author of the new book, “Conservatism: A Rediscovery.” He’s also host of the National Conservatism Conference, president of the Herzl Institute, and chairman of the Edmund Burke Foundation. We dive into a discussion of nationalism, cover the history of the conservative movement, tackle some of the gravest threats to America’s existence emerging from the radical left, and hear why he believes Americans need to return to living more religiously devoted lives.
While it’s not mentioned in the Heritage Foundation blurb, probably the most important detail about Hazony is that he just happened to be Netenyahu’s former speech writer.
Coincidentally, Peter Thiel funded the conservative foundation Hazony chairs and wrote a forward for his book.

So now you have all these different factions within the conservative party who have no loyalty to anyone, but do have to publicly attempt to explain their traditional willingness to embrace antisemitic rhetoric with their recent love affair with the Israeli government. It’s honestly kind of poetic.

News@lemmy.world•Heritage Foundation Staff Revolt Over Tucker Carlson and Nick Fuentes
2·2 days agoThey are all opportunists, so all bets are off at this point. There is no loyalty when your entire philosophy is built on heirarchies and looking out for yourself so that you can take the throne. Once you’re in the throne it’s all about doing whatever is necessary to keep your position of power.

politics @lemmy.world•Judges Order Trump to Pay for SNAP, Killing His Shutdown Strategy
31·2 days agoSorry, but that attitude is exactly why they keep gaining ground. That argument is propaganda that JD Vance and Adrian Vermule (the modern Carl Schmitt who is fucking obsessed with the OG Carl Schmitt) have been trying to promote for quite some time.
First it was JD Vance claiming that judges don’t have the authority to overrule a president’s executive authority. It’s not that JD Vance graduated from Yale without ever learning about checks and balances. It’s that he went on TV, and used his position of authority to state a lie that this administration needs to be true. When judges kept overruling Trump and using the legal system to undo much of the shit that he did, it back peddled to well he’s just going to take it to the supreme court anyway.
While that’s true, it’s turned into the Trump administration being bogged down with hundreds of lawsuits. While the supreme court is corrupt as fuck, it takes time for them to actually hear cases and make a decision. So claiming that judges and congress don’t still act as speed bumps to Trump’s evil plans is frankly bullshit.
If we can make it another year and prevent him from cancelling or rigging the elections, then we can take the house back and begin actually investigating some of this bullshit. This time next year the propaganda will be back to the standard: Your vote doesn’t really count, or why bother voting because both sides are the same. Just ignore the fact that some people are willing to work very hard and dump millions into propaganda campaigns discouraging voting, and rigging the law to make sure voting is made as difficult as possible.

politics @lemmy.world•Judges Order Trump to Pay for SNAP, Killing His Shutdown Strategy
392·3 days agoHitler literally got a law passed so that a judge couldn’t block him from doing anything. So until Trump has his Reischtag fire and declares a state of emergency it’s not really comparable.
Passed shortly after Hitler became Chancellor, the Act effectively transferred significant legislative authority from the Reichstag (the German parliament) to Hitler and his cabinet, allowing them to enact laws without parliamentary consent. The Act also permitted amendments to the constitution and control over the national budget. Despite its ostensibly reassuring language regarding the roles of the president and parliament, the Enabling Act fundamentally undermined democratic governance in Germany.

51·3 days agoWho should we support? Whichever trillionaire happens to control the most resources at the moment? Or more likely one of his candidates who does his bidding for him so he can always rely on diffusion of responsibility.
He uses his government connections to control people, eliminate competition in the market, and protect himself.
He wants to do all the things an authoritarian government would do, but since he’s not part of the government and calls himself a “libertarian,” it’s totally different.
I’m all for more choices on voting, but where is the 3rd party candidate that doesn’t just belong to some billionaire or Russia? I get that we’re not going to see one in a presidential election anytime soon, but if we ever expect to seriously move past a 2 party system, at least start at the local levels of government and prove it’s a feasible option.
If we just turn our backs on the few decent people left in politics because of their, label then we also risk eliminating people who really do care about making a difference.
Mamdani is running as a Democrat. AOC is a Democrat. They both had to fight like hell just to get where they are, would you suggest simply writing them off too?

News@lemmy.world•FBI arrests multiple law enforcement officers in sprawling Mississippi Delta drug conspiracy takedown
6·3 days agoMississippi has been the site in recent years of other federal probes into local law enforcement agencies that have resulted in criminal charges and lengthy prison sentences.
If this administration hadn’t literally just cancelled federal consent decrees all over the country, this might seem a little less suspicious.
The episode exposed firsthand the consequences of distrust born from the abuse of power by law enforcement, he said.
…if only somebody had said something before. Too bad nobody ever bothered mentioning it, and you had no way of knowing until now.
I’m honestly very conflicted. No doubt there is insane corruption from local police in these areas. However, Mississippi stretching into Memphis is also where a federal task force is currently trying to take over U.S. territory on behalf of Trump.
Like I get the big fish (in their book) are the cops taking bribes from undercover feds, but what about all of the other police corruption that doesn’t involve you bribing a cop?
What about all the cases of police brutality that have been dropped bc Trump removed the consent decree? What about all the people that ended up dead while in police custody? When do those people get justice?
