105·2 years agoI’ve read that twist a few times on Reddit about ‘victim blaming’, but suggesting mandatory helmets for bicycles it nothing about blaming anyone for anything. There is a problem on hand and there are are various solutions to improve it. Some solutions are more complex, some are simpler, some are projects with decades runtime to maybe achieve something.
Suggesting mandatory helmets is simply looking for the simplest and cheapest solution of them all, which has also the potential to achieve good success.
It’s just numbers, nothing to do with blame.
Pushing for higher diver education, better infrastructure, better technology on vehicles to avoid missing cyclists in the dead corner etc. is all good and important as well. But it’s all a lot more effort, way more costly, way longer time frame and the success is hard to judge for some ideas.

10·2 years agoIt’s just clickbait and a lie, when comparing to the statements in the sources they link.
Both sources are their own news, with both saying it’s less exercise on an e-bike. But by the concept of an e-bike, there is the possibility to ride more/longer/farther, which can lead - depending on the extra range - to more exercise, than a bike without motor.

In detail it’s described that Poland stopped paying Russia, so Russia stopped pumping gas via the Yamal pipeline to Poland. That is not ‘cutting-off’. Also Poland kept receiving natural gas from Russia via Nord Stream, via Germany and over to Poland during summer 2022. Yamal was running in reverse and supplying Poland, so that they even hit over 100% storage at that time. For Finland it’s similar - they stopped paying, so Russia stopped delivering.
Even today Russia supplies EU countries with natural gas, which is also part of the storage and supply calculation within the EU. What if Russia stops delivering tomorrow? How can these countries be supplied in such a scenario? Russia still has some leverage over a few countries, e.g. Austria via long-term contracts, where Austria stated not honouring the contracts from their side, would be more expensive that taking the natural gas.

Climate - truthful information about climate, related activism and politics.@slrpnk.net•Shell Sees Demand Surging for Liquefied Natural GasEnglish7·2 years agoI must admit I stopped reading after the first paragraph but it’s just so exaggerated or simply false, that I don’t see the value in spending more time on such an article.
Shell, Europe’s largest energy company, forecast on Wednesday that global demand for liquefied natural gas, which has been a lifeline for Europe after Russia cut off pipeline gas supplies, will surge by around 50 percent over the next 15 years.
- LNG is not a lifeline. A pipeline could be labelled like that, but LNG is a globally traded good supplied by dozens of countries.
- Russia did not cut off natural gas supplies, they even supply now throughout their illegal war, towards countries that support Ukraine.
- 50% increase over 15 years is not a ‘surge’, but more a slow and steady increase.

8·2 years agoThese charts are usually a day or a few days behind for individual kills. It takes time to collect statistics from the front lines, make reports and create that image overview out of it. So it’s never from events of the same day, always what recently happened.
I often saw videos of Russian columns advancing into fields and lots of wrecks at the end of the videos. Sometimes it even takes 2 days, but then there is the spike in numbers in the published data.

Global News@lemmy.zip•Trump 'encourages' Russia to attack NATO states not paying 'bills'English
5·2 years agoThat threat or that demand should be easy to fulfil on paper though via bureaucracy – just in case he makes it.
The USA has so many services and authorities included in their military, that other countries usually have separately. E.g. cost guard, army corps of engineers, space force etc.
It would just require some formal budget reallocation for all the countries, that have those services and authorities not in their military budget. And magically, on paper, everyone would suddenly be way over the 2% NATO target. With the USA being in a spot to not even complain about that ‘trickery’, as the mentioned sectors are in their own military budget anyway.
I was thinking about that detail as well. We only know the white hair picture from the wanted poster in the newspaper but no details about ‘Sun God’.
So there could be Shanks, last seen on Elbaf, who could know something and told the giants. Or we know there was also Jaguar D. Saul on Ohara, who knows about the void century. A friend of mine also mentioned Caribou, who was last seen on the Sunny in the barrel at Egghead, so maybe he was spying for them? Lots of possibilities.

World News@lemmy.world•UN agency fires staff members allegedly involved in October 7 attacks | CNNEnglish
10·2 years agoIf you believe the information on CNN is wrong, you could just use a web search for a different source to check and compare for yourself. Or just go to unrwa.org and their press releases:
26 January 2024 AMMAN,
“The Israeli Authorities have provided UNRWA with information about the alleged involvement of several UNRWA employees in the horrific attacks on Israel on 7 October.
“To protect the Agency’s ability to deliver humanitarian assistance, I have taken the decision to immediately terminate the contracts of these staff members and launch an investigation in order to establish the truth without delay. Any UNRWA employee who was involved in acts of terror will be held accountable, including through criminal prosecution.
“UNRWA reiterates its condemnation in the strongest possible terms of the abhorrent attacks of 7 October and calls for the immediate and unconditional release of all Israeli hostages and their safe return to their families.
“These shocking allegations come as more than 2 million people in Gaza depend on lifesaving assistance that the Agency has been providing since the war began. Anyone who betrays the fundamental values of the United Nations also betrays those whom we serve in Gaza, across the region and elsewhere around the world”.

It seems Plex has figured out lots of Plex ‘server admins’ are just normal Windows users and click OK on everything w/o reading any change logs or checking any settings. So it’s easier and saver to enable a lot of things right away. Admins can just go into settings and adjust it.

World News@lemmy.world•Germany warns of Russian attack on NATO within ‘5-8 years’English
11·2 years agoMisleading title.
Article:
“We hear threats from the Kremlin almost every day … so we have to take into account that Vladimir Putin might even attack a NATO country one day,” Pistorius said in an interview with the Berlin-based Der Tagesspiegel newspaper.
While a Russian attack is not likely “for now,” the minister added: “Our experts expect a period of five to eight years in which this could be possible.”
There is no warning of an attack. There is an analysis that it’s not likely for now. And earliest where something like this could become possible, would be that mentioned time frame. That is not what the word warning means. That is a statement about a vague estimate of an unlikely event - of course way less catchy title.
I think if it was Robin or someone from the crew, Oda would have just shown it. But he made it a secret, so there is something we don’t know.
Wikipedia also has a list with more countries and animals: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_national_animals
E.g. Denmark even has 3 national animals listed and not just the swan in the picture: Red squirrel (national mammal), Mute swan (national bird) and Small tortoiseshell (national butterfly).

2·2 years agoCertain infrastructure is planned in Germany, but bikes are of course not the target.
With the planned coal phase-out 2030-2038 (early optimistic scheduled date & later pessimistic date), the government is planning gas backup plants for 25 GW capacity. All those plants are planned for natural gas now and later to be switched to hydrogen. So the natural gas pipeline network is also included with upgrades in the future, to carry hydrogen.
For years already, in the northern parts there is sometimes too much renewable energy generated, so that wind and solar generation has to be disconnected from the grid. It’s just wasted for nothing. Ideally, some those excess capacities will be used in the future to generate hydrogen. Which then can be pumped into the grid, which again can be used for gas backup plants to generate electricity.
So trucks and bikes do have a chance there, even thought the infrastructure is currently schemed on a larger scale than vehicles.

1·2 years agoIt would also allow to do a small afternoon tour, e.g. jumping on the bike and going 200-300 km through nature just to chill, and then back home. Right now this means a 1 min break at a petrol station, as commonly after 200-250 km you have to refill.
With battery bikes and data sheet ranges of ‘up to’ 180 km, with 70 kg passenger at constant 45 km/h, you probably get to 20% charge after 80 km already to recharge to 80% within an hour. So after an hour waiting you just get enough to barely make it back home.
As you say, with hydrogen it would allow for shorter breaks, enabling to do a small afternoon tour at all. And I’m not that stingy about a 1min or 5min break to refill.

It feels like a cliffhanger for a turn of events. So e.g. Saturn getting really mad and ending, what Kizaru tried with his sword stab - because that truth is too dangerous in his eyes. Or it could also be a trivial message, e.g. that family counts the most in this world - see Kuma and Bonney backstory. I’m uncertain if Vegapunks part ends here or they manage to get him out. But then where to go and hide?
At least there is no break next week. I just hope the next chapter continues and we don’t jump around in the world for some parallel events.
