All other non-us maps mentioned here are, afaik, based on openstreetmap. OpenStreetMap itself is a database rather than a useful googlemaps replacement for navigation etcetera. Apps like Mapy and CoMaps are more useful for day-to-day use.

There are a lot of European alternatives already. Ok, maybe many of them aren’t exactly as smooth or marketed as the billion-dollar companies of the US, but many are still pretty good. The main problem is not the absence of good European tech, the main problem is a lack of funding (due to the absence of a common internal market), and a lack of enough marketing power. And a surplus of ‘IT-managers’ that pretend to be the expert but don’t know there’s life outside the googlosphere.

That’s true, but Bluesky is also 100 times better than X and probably a more feasible/realistic alternative for all kinds of companies/sports clubs/government agencies/etc. Although I prefer Mastodon in principle, I am quite sceptical about the chance that it will be seen (by the general public) as such a good alternative to X that they will actually consider themselfs being able to leave X.

Thanks for sharing this article. Made me enthusiastic to use CoMaps to do on-the-road edits, but 2 questions:

1. How to add or change an amenity on the address node? For example I want to add a restaurant on an address where’s currently no shop or restaurant. Or the map shows an electronics shop but now there’s a furniture shop, can I change that in the app? (Updating url or opening hours of existing amenities works fine, btw).
2. Is it possible for the app to show all OSM based apps at first, when clicking ‘open in another map’ ?
