Yeah, I’d rather be doing a good thing poorly, than a bad thing successfully.

Mildly Interesting@lemmy.world•California's youth gun homicide rate dropped 50% between 2006-2022. Over the same period, Texas's rate rose 49% and Florida's rate rose 23%
2·5 months agoDamn, that 2020 spike really tells a whole other tragic story of its own.

Bikini Bottom Twitter@lemmy.world•Which one is boosted and which one is real
212·5 months ago5 star reviews (even real ones) are useless. They generally just say: “awesome product, love it”
No feedback or product info and anything. 4 stars and 2 stars are the most interesting to me. People who don’t care and like it rate 5, people who don’t care but didn’t like it rate 1.
2 and 4 star ones thought about the product and found at least one fault normally, and that lets you read about it a bit more. And then you can decide if the issues mentioned by the comments directly are worth it for the price for you.
Plus it’s generally easier to tell if the 4 star text review is real.

Showerthoughts@lemmy.world•The name "seagull" implies the existence of landgulls, airgulls, and firegulls.
7·5 months agoLong ago, the four gulls lived together in harmony. Then everything changed when the fire gulls attacked…
Bold move claiming a finch can beat an owl on Lemmy…

Lemmy Shitpost@lemmy.world•Due to American politics I'm afraid of using high speed rail in Germany
352·5 months agoTo add context for anyone who doesn’t know: DB is notorious for being incredibly delayed. Lots of cancellations, 30-40 minutes late is no rarity, and if you have a connection to catch I can guarantee you that it’ll be the ONE train running on time.
So you are right to be concerned, but only because you’ll never get to start your journey in the first place.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Why did gandhi ask britain to seek peace with nazi germany?
31·6 months agoWell, I’d certainly want someone else to check his work first!
But even that is beside the point. Gandhi’s achievements aren’t in an inherently rational and objective field. No matter who you are, gravity works the same.
But instead Gandhi’s field is morals, ethics and politics. Those are inherently subjective and about opinions. If you have a really shitty opinion, then yeah, I’ll question your other opinions.
Cool, in that case using super glue on the lock should block that up enough that people won’t be able to use it any more, and it should be much cheaper than buying anything new.
When it comes to keeping people out though, do keep in mind that no realistically usable suitcase will prevent access once someone has access to some basic tools and privacy.
Bit of a follow up question: what exactly is your goal? Remove the lock quickly/cheaply or to actually have a secure/sturdy suitcase?
Is it in case it gets stolen or to avoid accidental damage?
I guess overall just why is having the lock an issue for you? I can think of many reasonable ones (I don’t like them either) just want to know which one it is for you.
This is awesome, definitely adding that stream to my bookmarks. Thanks for sharing!

memes@lemmy.world•What do you think will the tech bros jump on next?
3·7 months agoYeah, Sort of.
Don’t get me wrong, I’m not a huge fan of NFTs and do think there’s easier ways, but I would agree that taking market control away from the companies owning it would kind of be the point (but I do think you can probably still do this concept without any NFTs).
Sure, steam could allow game trading right now with no need for NFTs whatsoever, but the point would be that I can trade a game I bought through Xbox, to someone on Steam, and then go buy something on the Epic store with the money.
And all of it without some crazy fee from the involved platforms.
But that also would probably still require government intervention to force companies to accept this. Because, again, none of the companies would actually want this. NTF or not that doesn’t change.

memes@lemmy.world•What do you think will the tech bros jump on next?
259·7 months agoNFTs could have been great, if they had been used FOR the consumer, and not to scam them.
Best thing I can think of is to verify licenses for digital products/games. Buy a game, verify you own it like you would with a CD using an NFT, and then you can sell it again when you’re done.
Do this with serious stuff like AAA Games or Professional Software (think like borrowing a copy of Photoshop from an online library for a few days while you work on a project!) instead of monkey pictures and you could have the best of both worlds for buying physical vs buying online.
However, that might make corporations less money and completely upend modern licencing models, so no one was willing to do it.
But it also doesn’t include the benefits you gain from those taxes.
There’s your net income, and your disposable income at the end, after you paid for insurance, food, medicine, and all the other things you need to survive. Looking at the net income instead of the disposable one makes the US seem, very clearly, much better off.
However, as soon as you start looking into disposable income and a true, “net net” of how much money I can save and spend on god knows what, the US starts falling behind FAST.
As a result, most US Americans tend to cope using that nice big number and conveniently forget the real number at the end.
But do keep in mind this is general and doesn’t always hold true. As much as I may dislike the US right now, the US really is more like 50 tiny countries than one big one, so results vary depending on where you look. Especially along the Democrat-Republican divide.

Yeah, this is simply the correct answer. Everything else I’ve read here ranges from overcomplicated to completely insane.
Why are people so obsessed with digital/internet voting?
Just use normal ballots, with pen and paper, and have a little patience while it gets collected, mailed and counted!
