Back when all screens were more-or-less the same size and nothing ever had to scale. Your UI was the size it was, and if your screen was too big, too bad! You can either stretch it and deal with the pixelly mess, or squint your eyes to see the teeeny tiny program.

2·30 days agoIsn’t FFXIV an MMO? I don’t remember it being very Game of Thrones-y.

6·30 days agoI’m of the opinion that it really depends on the nature of the game.
For example, the children are super hyped for GTA VI, because even though GTA V came out before some of them had object permanence, they’ve been playing it for years. It’s remained in their consciousness this entire time.
Compare that to Skyrim, which came out only a year or so before GTA V, and we haven’t seen an Elder Scrolls game since… The young don’t give a toss. They weren’t playing it then, they aren’t playing it now, so there’s absolutely no attachment to Elder Scrolls as a series.
Games used to stay in the consumer’s consciousness before by having sequels made every few years, sometimes even every year! Now? It’s all live services, so it doesn’t feel like the game hasn’t had a new iteration for over a decade.
In other words: Kids aren’t attached to franchises anymore because the game industry is stagnating.
You forgot to scoop!
Which shaders do you use?
It’s a very specific subset of neurodivergents, tbh. I don’t see much discussion around typically geeky topics. On Reddit, if I had a fleeting thought or question about a fictional world, I had /r/asksciencefiction. On the fediverse? No such board. The answer to that is “Oh just create it”, but I don’t have the time or the attention span to moderate such a place.

Political Memes@lemmy.world•We're creating history right nowEnglish
71·1 month agoI’d give it till 2090 before we get history students talking about WW3 properly. WW2 ended in much of Europe and Asia being completely devastated, and the recovery was only as quick as it was because the Americas were mostly untouched by the war. WW3 is gonna be much the same, except possibly worldwide. We’ll bounce back, humanity tends to do that, but it’ll take longer before nation states are recovered enough to have these sorts of lessons.
I thought EasyAntiCheat didn’t like Linux?
The only thing stopping me from moving to Linux is the fact I want to play Battlefield 6 and Space Marine 2.

41·1 month agoWas it? Because I remember how things were in 2012, and that’s not how I remember it. Anita Sarkeesian started her Kickstarter in May of 2012, and thus Gamergate was unofficially born, and 2 years later it was officially born, followed by Brexit, followed by Trump. Technically Anita’s stuff wasn’t what kicked off Gamergate, but the backlash against her primed an audience ready to pounce when Gamergate actually started and took half the internet on the road to fascism.
2012 is the year everything started going downhill. While yes, some social progress was made, it was in 2012 that the seeds of today’s problems were planted, at least on the internet anyway. One could argue that 9/11 and the Patriot Act and massive expansion of executive power contributed heavily as well.
Either way, shit was bad in 2012 as well, we were all just too blind to see it. The only people who actually did see it were pariahs on the internet for years and weren’t listened to because they were 'SJW’s.
I remember when my mum used to say “Don’t bother your dad, he’s on the internet” like it was this big important thing. Not “He’s checking his email”, or anything more specific, the simple act of being on the internet was actually of note.
I’m pretty sure that’s a sidequest in Starfield. The ECS Constant colony ship set off in 2140 to colonise a planet, arriving in 2330 at the planet Paradiso, which had become a luxury resort planet for the rich, because shortly after the ship left, humanity invented the grav drive and every ship just zoomed right past them.

302·1 month agoIt’s a good thing I trusted my instinct on that one. Any MMO with a ‘founders pack’ prior to release is a scam, or if it’s not a scam, it says that the developers have no faith in their product and want your money now while they don’t have to actually deliver anything of note.
Only 150 light years away?! Wow, that’s practically next door! Now all we need to do is figure out how to go light speed and even then it’ll take a further 300 years just to know if the colonists got there safely or not!

151·1 month agoThe more I think about the late 90s and mid 00s, the less I want to go back to it. What I want is to not know things, not know how horrible things are, because I know things in the 90s and 00s were horrid too, I was just too young to notice.
I’m sure there are some people out there that have nostalgia for 2012 because that’s when they were a child. I remember the massive push for Ron Paul 2012 and how insufferable everyone was.

I think that’s a tad excessive. Sure, Windows sucks, but it’s not my machine so I don’t give a shit. Now, if they expected me to bring my own machine and also insist that it’s Windows, I’ll get pissed off and refuse the offer. Their machine though? They can demand whatever they want, so long as I can actually do my job.
9/10 times it’s not Windows I’m fighting against when I’m unable to do my job, it’s the IT department not giving me admin rights over the right folders so I can’t even install Docker without spending 3 days with them to get the right permissions.
