Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•How does your daily commute to work look like?English
3·2 years agoIts a 38 minute drive without tolls and a 33 minute drive with tolls. Ill suffer the 5 minutes to avoid $30 in tolls every month.
I actually live in a more expensive area than where I work, but I do so because the entire state is still somewhat affordable (Kansas) and the city I live in is much more progressive than the one I work in.
Ive been applying to a remote first company I want to work for for about 3 weeks now and ive got 1 failed interview and about 30 reject letters. Can’t complain, ive got a good job now, but I want to go back to remote work

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What's something that recently boggled your mind?English
1·2 years agoI dont actively watch it, but its hard to avoid. In the Midwest, many TVs are just on fox news 24/7 in public spaces and offices.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•So is the US slipping into Civil War?English
571·2 years agoI’d say its not getting coverage because Texas talks about seceding almost every year and states have been using their national guard as political tools for years now.
When the national guard was sent to DC after the insurrection, Texas pulled their national guard back because of “poor treatment”. I was there, there was no poor treatment. Texas (and several more states afterwards) used their national guard as a political tool to make the other side seem bad.

News@lemmy.world•US Supreme Court agrees to hear Oregon case over homelessness policiesEnglish
22·2 years agoWell 5% really doesn’t match this crime, I just selected the number randomly as an example.
I also could have worded it better, but I was trying to get at having a limit, $100 for example, where if the fine is below that number, you round down to zero. It could maybe just be paperwork or something

2·2 years agoIt should apply, if only the rich werent the ruling class. Id consider taking money from someone who has nothing/very little to be cruel.

42·2 years agoWhat about a 5% of your total wealth fine rounded down to the nearest $100 (if we could accurately find and report the wealth of individuals).
Houseless people would get a big fat $0 fine and that rich fucker who could usually just write the fee off as an incidental would be hurting.

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•What's the point of American police saying "Show your hands" after they shot a man?English
5·2 years agoNo, but it’s going to take longer for them to confirm the scene is safe for first aid and paramedics.

14·2 years agoFirefox snap doesn’t work with keepassxc browser integration and smart cards randomly, so I uninstalled the default snap on ubuntu, edited configs to make sure it didnt grab snap by default, and then install the deb Firefox.
Every single fucking time I did a distro upgrade, ubuntu uninstalled deb Firefox, rwdis the configs to automatically install snap Firefox, and then reinstalled snap Firefox.
One of the reasons I left windows was because it kept changing my default browser. How is ubuntu any better?
I started my linux journey on ubuntu 11.10. I have some real nostalgia and loyalty to that platform, but I recently gave up on it and switched to fedora because of its relentless self-promotion is snap. I feel like you’d be doing a disservice to recommend it as a gateway into Linux to someone nowadays.
