Anthropology@mander.xyz•Researchers have named a new species in the Homo genus.English
4·1 year agoDenisovans, Xiahe and Penghu are the only three in that lot that have any genetic link between them, with the tooth from Vietnam being “morphologically similar” to the Denisovans tooth fragment and the two skull caps being guesses based on their robusticity. More testing is needed to group these all together in to a new species, especially so with H. longii, but the researchers with access to the dragon man specimen so far are refusing.

3·1 year agoThe Cayman GT4 in GT7 is just sublime. Pointy, but with great mid-corner stability.

Australian News@aussie.zone•Controversial dynamic ticket pricing to be banned in Australia amid sweeping federal crackdown
20·1 year ago“Ticketing giants Ticketmaster and Ticketek have defended the practice, saying prices were set by artists and their teams, and that demand-driven pricing mitigates the problem of ticket scalping.”
People were fed up with scalpers overcharging for tickets, so we decided to overcharge in their place. Problem solved, you’re welcome!

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What are some good places to visit in Scotland?
2·2 years agoTime to start practicing then! Try to get out on a couple of grade 3’s in your area before you head over.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What are some good places to visit in Scotland?
2·2 years agoI did it with hiking shoes because that’s all I had with me, but I’d recommend hiking boots with good ankle support instead. There’s a short scramble towards the top but it’s not overly difficult.
Another favourite of that trip was the Old Man of Storr up at the Isle of Skye. It’s a less technical hike but much more exposed to the elements and can get windy.
Also, I’m by no means a photographer. Scotland is just so stupidly pretty that you struggle to take a bad photo- get over there!

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What are some good places to visit in Scotland?
7·2 years agoI took a hike up in to the Lost Valley in Glen Coe on the recommendation of a very drunk Scotsman at a nightclub in Edinburgh. It was the absolute highlight of my trip and I’m so glad I made it.

The police marching at Pride or the protesters?
They were protesting the police marching in the pride parade

Australia@aussie.zone•Captain Cook statue sawn off at the ankles on eve of Australia Day
131·2 years agoIt was a gorgeous with bright oranges and yellows, filled with faces of people and hounds in a grotesque style. Whoever the vandal was took particular offence to the eyes and teeth, because that’s what they covered in white roller. Unfortunately council has now painted the whole thing over with grey.

352·2 years agoShame the age didn’t give this much attention to the regular defacement of the gorgeous mural just behind this statue that some knob kept painting bible verses over last year.

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.ca•Why does bi-weekly mean "every two weeks?" This has always bothered me because intuitively it should mean "twice a week."
3·2 years agoThe word for an occurrence of every two years or for a duration of two years is biennial. Plenty of events are biennial, such as festivals, exhibitions and conferences. The Olympics and Football World Cup are quadrennial.

That’s what I was thinking, either casing the place (but it is a secure apartment building) or will pressure for cash. I’m big and ugly enough to feel secure with a stranger, but you’re right, I’ll give the UK number a ring when they open this evening.
