Climate@slrpnk.net•Carney Government Knew Carbon Capture Was ‘Very Limited,’ Docs Show6·2 months agoAccording to the prime minister’s former Chief of Staff Marco Mendicino, climate has always been a secondary concern. A key goal for the Carney government, Mendicino explained at a Toronto conference in January, is “to increase our oil production.”
Sad.
Hopefully it’ll change some day. But yeah, the stigma found on an institutional level is big regarding a ton of preventative medicine that would be cheaper for society as a whole if covered.

16·3 months agoEh, it happens. With true independent self hosting you get occasional hiccups. I suggest not worrying about such events too much. Accepting occasional downtimes is the punk in solarpunk, if you ask me.

Disability and Accessibility@beehaw.org•The DWP has denied nearly half a million disabled people daily living PIP in just 21 monthsEnglish
6·9 months agoThis seems worrying. In recent history it was the nazis who thought disabled people were expendable, the UK shouldn’t go down that same route.

Selfhosted@lemmy.world•ISPs seem designed to funnel people to capitalist cloud servicesEnglish
1·11 months agoThe alternative is to get your ISP to offer you a static IPv6 and a reverse DNS PTR entry for your IPv6, like I asked for in the initial post. Some ISPs do if you offer them more money, some only do if you offer them more money and a legit business registration, apparently a few rare ones do it for free, and some never do it.
Once you got the static IP, you can point DNS directly to yourself, and there’s no VPS or anything in between. Browser traffic and so on directly comes to your machine.

1·11 months agoWhile I agree on a practical level, and pragmatism sure is important, long term it still makes you pay into cloud services and gives cloud companies an easy way to directly man-in-the-middle your traffic. So I’m hoping one day the situation will improve.

Solarpunk@slrpnk.net•Solarpunk instance going offline for awhile was like a true solarpunk experienceEnglish
4·11 months agoI feel like downtimes are a badge of honor for self-hosting in some ways. Being more efficient and minimal means there will be slightly less redundancy and that can be a good thing. Perfect uptime to avoid lost revenue during downtime is a capitalist craze, and not how an ecological project should operate.
understandable. how dare you change your schedule without advance notice to the cat monarchs of the household :-o

1·1 year agoFor what it’s worth, the upstream issue appears to be this one: https://github.com/LemmyNet/lemmy/issues/4120 And it seems like there is some vague interest in this being solved in the medium term feature. So let’s not give up hope just yet.

Meta (slrpnk.net)@slrpnk.net•Abuse problem with DMs and lack of deleteEnglish
6·1 year agoAn inbox delete would be enough as far as the user is concerned, it wouldn’t need to be deleted on the server side. But e.g. some people send literal gore. Moderation is useful but understandably may often take a while, so until then there should be a way to get it out of sight.

3·3 years agoFor what it’s worth, this is a long rabbithole on the whole e2ee thing so just in short:
From what I gathered poking around in the past XMPP’s OMEMO seems to have had shakier protocol design often leading to silently lost messages if you use multiple devices (I asked around among devs what it actually did and why, would take a while to explain) while Matrix usually has noisily lost messages so you can try to resend. So since that happened to me I’ve abandoned XMPP personally, I wouldn’t know why these differences existed or whether it was fixed since then.
(Regarding group chats, I also think e2ee is still useful there, can limit leaks a little if you use history since joining and ban leakers if possible.)

Leider das übliche Level von nach unten tretend (meine Meinung), dass von CDU+SPD zu erwarten ist…
Die einzige Überraschung für mich ist, dass so viele Leute CDU wählen.
