World News@lemmy.world•Plans to take Gaza City are met with defiance from war-weary Palestinians and anger by many IsraelisEnglish
75·3 months agoYes, Netanyahu is a far-right extremist and saying he only wants Hamas to surrender at this point is wild.
But Zionism itself is not the problem here. The problem is fascism. Zionism is only the idea that Israel as a Jewish state should exist. That could very well co-exist with a Palestinian state. That the Israeli government doesn’t want to allow that is because the government is fascist.

Lemmy Shitpost@lemmy.world•And nothing of value was lost
11·4 months agoYeah no, saying fascists aren’t human beings isn’t “funny” or “quirky”. Is fascists dying a beautiful thing? Sure. But they’re still humans.

Mildly Interesting@lemmy.world•Something is wrong with the Anglosphere
3·4 months agoNet migration rate is 3 per 1000 people in the US and 3.2 in the UK. Germany has a net migration rate of 1.8 per 1000, France 1.1, and every other Western European country has at least 3.5. Also Germany and France both have a higher percentage of their population being immigrants than both the US and UK. So that’s definitively not it.

politics @lemmy.world•Mamdani appoints top DNC and Obama adviser in bid to secure Democratic Party establishment support
325·4 months agoConservative =/= Republican. Some of the perceptions in the US are skewed so far to the right that you don’t even realise how conservative the Democratic Party is. In a lot of other countries in the world, there are like 3-4 major parties left of where Obama stood, but only like 1, maybe 2, right of him.

4·5 months agoCouldn’t it just be that in those states, straight people watch a lot less porn so the gay people living there just make up a bigger percentage of porn being watched?

You Should Know@lemmy.world•YSK: Non-violent protests are 2x more likely to succeed and no non-violent movement that has involved more than 3.5% of a population has ever failed
1·5 months agoAlso what these articles always fail to consider: Usually protests become violent when peaceful protests have failed. So violent protests often face something that is much harder to change/politicians are more unwilling to change. So of course they are less often successful. Not because they are less effective, but because the nature of their demands is different.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What are commonly used idioms/metaphors that make no sense to anyone who knows about the topic they come from?
31·6 months agoYeah no, the sling was considered a very very deadly weapon back then. That’s the thing. And that’s not what bible school would want to portray. But the sling as a weapon was pretty much the Magnum Revolver of those days.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What are commonly used idioms/metaphors that make no sense to anyone who knows about the topic they come from?
2·6 months agoI don’t know about ancient duel rules to say whether bringing a sling was permitted. The take is more along the lines of “David wasn’t an underdog. If anything, David was the clear favourite to win because of his weapon”. Because a sling at the time was a highly effective and deadly weapon which was still regularly used for centuries after the supposed events of that biblical story because of its effectiveness.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What are the most unhinged cartoons in your expert opinion?
