Google Reader was the best. Not sure why Google killed it, but it was really good at both content discovery and keeping up with sites you’re interested in. I tried several alternatives but nothing came close, so I gave up and hung out more on forums / link aggregators like slashdot, hacker news, reddit and now lemmy for content discovery. I’m also interested to hear what others use.

Abusing students is fine in Hogwarts, but licking is apparently unacceptable.

Technology@lemmy.world•Reddit: 'We Are in the Early Stages of Monetizing Our User Base'English
18·2 years agoBut back then Reddit still believed in opening up their platform, and their relation with their users was not adversarial. Their source code was even available on GitHub with an open source license! It didn’t feel much different to us sending monthly donations to instance admins and Lemmy devs now on Lemmy. People genuinely didn’t want Reddit to shut down back then.

3·2 years agoIt’s true, Apple stole ideas so much there is a term for it among the dev community: Sherlocking .
One of the most famous sherlocking case is Apple removing FlickType citing compliance with apple store guidelines, only to launch a similar app later: https://twitter.com/keleftheriou/status/1437845736951992321

2·2 years agoUS citizens using their bank account to transfer fund to each other [impossible]
This is because sharing bank account and routing number is not safe for many US banks which may allow unauthorized party to pull money from the account. Banks in the rest of the world typically operate in “push” only so they don’t have this issue.

6·2 years agoGoogle is way ahead of you, they are a certificate authority now, so in theory they can do this right now. Take a look at any site’s https certificate and a significant portion of them are now signed by Google Trust Services LLC thanks to Cloudflare using them to generate free https certificates (in addition to letsencrypt). Note that they won’t ever pull this trick though because it’ll irreversibly damage their reputation.

3·2 years agoIt’s too big to fail now. Advertisers hardcode it into their apps and iot devices to evade DNS adblockers for a while now.
The previous Microsoft’s CEO truly hates FOSS, famously calling it cancer. Then the next CEO reversed Microsoft’s stance on FOSS, acquiring the largest FOSS collaboration site. Naturally, many view this move with suspicion since Microsoft has a history of embracing something only to extinguish it later.

Android@lemmy.world•Transfer files from phone with broken screen possible?English
21·2 years agoIf the screen is broken (not showing anything) but the digitizer (touch) is still working, you might be able to plug the phone to your computer and blindly unlock your phone to enable usb data transfer with trial and error. It’s going to be hard to tap the correct button without seeing it, but you might get lucky. Alternatively, your phone might support hdmi. If you have a usb c to hdmi dongle, you might want to try connecting your phone to your tv/monitor.
If the digitizer is broken (touch not working) but the screen still working, you can plug a mouse with an otg cable to control the device and initiate data transfer.
If both the screen and digitizer is broken, you’re probably out of luck unless you already have usb debugging enabled beforehand, or have a usb-c hub so you can use a monitor and mouse at the same time.

I guess they’re training their soldiers for biological warfare.
